Thinning Locks

I asked Muslimahlocs if she has micro micro locks and her response was, "Compared to your picture definitely."

While those super micro SLs are gorgeous, I knew hands down they are not for me. First off, I would have to forget about ever doing my own retightenings and second, the tiny locks I do have, have me so paranoid that they are going to break off. I've already combined some of them but they are still much to little for my own personal liking. I really don't want to do anymore combining if I don't have to. So I'm hoping the roots will grow in thicker.
Of course these problem locks are at my unstable front hairline.

Perhaps it wouldn't be so bad if my locks started out that way. But I suspect some of my locks have thinned due to natural hair thinning and/or retightenings done where the tension of the lock was done waay to tight.

In this pic here, note the difference of the lock I'm pointing to versus the other locks around it.

I guess I will have to do what's necessary and hope for the best.

I bet that is a result of [Insert name] retightening your hair that one time. I remember hearing all kinds of hair snapping as [Insert name] retightening mine. I am sure it had to do some weakening. The reason I had her to start spraying my hair with water first before retightening each lock. It minimized the snapping and the pain!

You are in good hands now, and it will recover eventually, but I know you are rather disgusted!

I also have some thinning locks throughout my hairline and I'm hoping my roots will thicken as well.....sigh...

Girl you are not alone. I have been dealing with thin hair all my life so I thought thinning locks here and there where expected. I just wish I could do something about it. The other other day I realized that I have micro sized locks as I look at the other locked sisters on here. Unfortunately I wasn't asked or aware that SL came in different sizes, I wonder if I would have goten a bigger size would I have the same problem. Anyways,
This is a nice pic of your locks they look good and your hair is still growning. Keep it up girl.

So wait... forgive me, but I don't see the problem... do you have a thinner weak spot IN a lock, or is the bed too small, as in not enough hairs were used to MAKE the lock??

i feel your pain sister...thinning locs are never much fun. can you join it to another one close to it to prevent it from breaking off?

Mali - I have no doubt miss you know who did cause some of the weak spots from choke holding the hair follicles. After seeing the dandruff get trapped in the locks
as well, going back to her is an absolute no no.

Meikmeika - So many of us have this issue. Sigh......

Sistalocd - Thanks so much for the compliment girlie. If I had it to do again, I would of gone bigger at my hairline instead of smaller. It was already very weak to begin with.

Think about it, the hairline is going to get the most stress due to
ponytails, headbands, updos, etc.

Sunsail - Quite alright. But thinning locks are indeed a problem for me. They did not
start out this way as you can see the bottom ends of the locks are a decent width. But I do believe, retightening, separating locks, natural hair shedding, and updo styling all contributed to the problem.

Naadi - You are correct. It is indeed a pain. Since I've combined most of the thin locks already, I'm going to do the wait and see plan before any more combining.

Only a few have me on pins and needles, like the one shown in the middle of my face. The others do have sturdier root beds so I think they will be ok. There's just that
significant difference in sizing from most other locks.

This is a subject I can truly relate to. I've had some thin locks combined already, and watching other thin ones. So far the thin ones I am watching have thick roots, so I will just have to see how they progress. Keep us updated on your progress.

I have a few that are hanging on for dear life as well. I realised just recently that they were in my hairline but I just continue to watch them. I have decided not to put too much stress on the hairline too often. On that note I have a retightening coming up and I am going to ask my consultant not to go all the way to the scalp on the rotations and see if the pain is any less.

one love still
ps I get a headache everytime I retighten and she keeps telling me it is not supposed to(:

Someone somewhere (sorry about the vagueness) told me that loc's are forgiving. I hope the thinness will pass. Or, you can pull a "Jen" and sew the loc back on.. you have to look at her early posts to see what I mean. Either way, I still love your hair--it's beautiful to me (:

Aya - Will do. Be sure to keep us posted on your updates as well.

Still W- OMG, you too! There are a lot more of us dealing with this than I realized. What's going on?

You really shouldn't be getting headaches unless she is one of those who pulls and pulls or your scalp is very very sensitive.

Chi - Chi - oh sweet Jesus! I haven't lost any locks yet. I hope I never do. But if so, I guess it won't be the end of the world with this remedy.

AHHH MAN. I hate you are going through this T. Let us know what you do. You already know my solution. and even though my front ones are rather large compared to the others, They 'feel' heartier, ya know what I mean? You can always combine and leave it there, you will still have your fullness and a happier lock.

Goodnapps said...

Hey Chele. Thanks but it really isn't as bad as it seems. It's only a lock here or there. Unless absolutely dire necessary. No further combining I'm going to do.

which is exactly why i (a) maintain my own hair and (b) have only let master trainers or trainers touch my hair (not saying that avg. consultants or trainees are not as good or equally qualified).

i have not experienced any size-related breakage. the only breakage i have had was after childbirth (whacky hormones) which would have been @ year 9 of 11 on sisterlocks journey).

do you ever find that new hair that just sprouts up in between your locks?

Goodnapps said...

Muslimahlocs - Of course you're not saying avg trainees aren't good enough. You've been fortunate to have been in the company of master trainers to do so. Most of us aren't so lucky. We can barely find a trainee let a lone a master trainer (that's around the corner from home that is).

The only new hair growth I've got is in the hairline. After all, that's exactly where I need it. The rest of my head is just fine.

Don't even get me to talking about thinning locks. We'd just have to exchange stories over the phone. However, thin locks and all...I love my Sisterlocks!!! Hang in there sis!

Thanks Maryee. I most certainly will!

I feel you on the thinning locs. My front locs are still temperamental after nearly 4 years, but I have learned to live with it. It has taught me even more about patience and acceptance.

Be blessed~

Goodnapps said...

Jen - ugh oh. I don't know if that's good or bad. By 4 years I was hoping to have things under control. You mean it may not be so!

I know it's been a while since this topic was originally posted, but I did some research to find this because I think I'm experiencing the same issue, and if so, I have a couple of questions.

I've had my sisterlocks for a long time now--about 6 years. I *had* a lock along my hairline that was about 6-7 inches long, and it was of a decent thickness. One day I looked up and out of the blue, it's hanging on by about 6 strands of hair close to about 2 inches from the scalp! So, nice lock from base to 2 inches, the 1/4 inch length of 6 hairs, and then back to nice lock all the way down.

Since it was in the front along the hairline, I didn't see where combining would help the look much, so out of frustration and impatience I just pulled it off (yes, that hurt--emotionally...).

So, a) is this what everybody is talking about, and b) what of all of you who decided to leave your thin one(s) alone? Are they still hanging on, did you combine them, etc.

Thx.

I'm having that problem, some broke off when my hair was wet and some I tore off. I have 3 that I have twisted with others till I meet my consultant in 9 days time that I hope she can combine and save. Since I last saw her I have lost 4 locs to breakage due to thinning most at the hairline. I've started taking hair supplements and eating better to help my hair. My locs are average 6 to 8 inches after 2 years and anytime I self maintain I lose locs so thus far 20 lost since 2006.

Hello ladies. I am new to this forum. I came upon it, from desperation of thinning locks. I feel better just knowing that I am not alone.I have been growing my locks for about 5 years. My hair just started coming out in the top within the past year and a half. I have noticed within the past 6 months that I have had a strand here and a strand here hanging and then when I least expect it, the strand has broken off completely, leaving me when a thin patch where my hair once was. It's only in the top of my head. I have fine hair. it's a nice grade of hair. Thick everywhere but the top. My mother's hair is thin on top, but I never had that problem until recently. I want to either cut my locks real short or cut them off completely and start the process over. I'm attached to my here, but find myself wearing scarves to work more and more, to hide the thinnig hair. I work in an office, and would like to get the "old" me back, like when I first started my locks. I don't want to abandon the locks altogether, as I love the style and it looks nice on me. In the meantime, I neep help. Can any of you sisters please give me some advice. Tired of feeling ashamed.... Thanks!!!

Hello Ladies!
I've had a problem with my locks thinning in places, mostly half-way down or further down the lock itself. I do color my hair, but only touching up the roots where there is no problem of breakage. I've had my locks for six years and breakage wasn't a problem until this year. Perhaps it may have been due to the stress of finishing my BA, moving 3 times before a big international move...who knows. Perhaps my water intake could increase and my diet improve, but I turned the problem into a solution: bangs/ fringe!
